"Sentinel Penguins of the Mojave" - by Tim Shead

The title came to me after hearing "sentinel chickens" mentioned in a newscast about the spread of West Nile virus. The phrase stuck with me, and the image of a heavily-armed sentinel penguin was a no-brainer for a Linux enthusiast. Setting it in the Mojave desert saved me from having to create a landscape, and the rest is history.

Some render notes:

  • Uses subdivision meshes for the penguin body, beak, arms, and helmet.
  • Uses the Ken Musgrave Luna shader to color the landscape.
  • Uses the Larry Gritz stucco shader to provide relief.
  • A special displacement shader created the ribs in the rifle handgrip.
  • Rendered with Aqsis.
